More about Suboxone
Suboxone product details
Suboxone is a prescription combination of buprenorphine and naloxone used to treat opioid dependence, often called opioid use disorder in current clinical practice. It is a treatment for a potentially life-threatening condition, rather than a substitute for emergency overdose reversal. The film is placed under the tongue or against the inside of the cheek as directed. Effective care can include ongoing clinical follow-up, psychosocial support and attention to other health conditions; treatment duration depends on the person’s needs.
Generic name buprenorphine / naloxone Brand names Suboxone, Zubsolv (different formulation) Drug class Opioid use disorder treatment Available forms Sublingual/buccal films: 2/0.5, 4/1, 8/2, 12/3 mg.
How it works Buprenorphine binds strongly to mu-opioid receptors and activates them only partially. This can suppress withdrawal and craving while limiting some agonist effects compared with full agonists, but serious respiratory depression remains possible. Its strong receptor affinity can displace another opioid and trigger withdrawal if treatment is started at the wrong time. Naloxone blocks opioid receptors; it has relatively limited systemic availability when the combination is used through the mouth as directed and is included to discourage misuse by injection. The naloxone in Suboxone does not make the product overdose-proof.
FDA-approved for treatment of opioid dependence, as part of a comprehensive plan that includes counseling and psychosocial support. Clinicians distinguish induction from maintenance; it is not an opioid-overdose rescue product or a routine pain-treatment formulation.
Common side effects Headache, nausea, constipation, sweating.
