More about Hydrocodone

Hydrocodone product details

Hydrocodone is a full mu-opioid receptor agonist that changes the brain’s response to painful signals. The same receptor activity can slow breathing and gastrointestinal movement, helping explain respiratory depression and constipation. Acetaminophen contributes analgesia through central pathways whose complete mechanism is not fully established. It does not prevent hydrocodone-related overdose and adds its own liver toxicity risk. The presence of two active ingredients makes it necessary to review both opioid exposure and total acetaminophen from all medicines.

Generic name hydrocodone bitartrate / acetaminophen Brand names Norco (brand association), generic hydrocodone/acetaminophen Drug class Opioid analgesic combination Available forms Common tablets: 5/325, 7.5/325, 10/325 mg.

Common side effects Constipation, nausea, dizziness, sedation.

Serious reactions & long-term concerns Respiratory depression can be fatal, particularly when treatment starts, after a dose increase, or with another sedative. Acetaminophen-associated acute liver failure may follow overdose or overlapping products, and early symptoms may not reflect the severity of injury. Other serious opioid effects include severe hypotension, adrenal insufficiency, sleep-related breathing problems, and increased pain sensitivity during longer use. Accidental ingestion by a child is an emergency. Regular opioid use in pregnancy may cause neonatal withdrawal requiring treatment after birth.

Hydrocodone / Norco vs Oxycodone Hydrocodone/acetaminophen and oxycodone are both Schedule II opioid treatments, but the Norco-associated combination includes acetaminophen and thus an additional liver-safety consideration. Oxycodone is sold in single-ingredient and combination products and in immediate- and extended-release forms; the name alone does not identify its full formulation. Both can suppress breathing, cause constipation and produce dependence. Their milligram strengths are not interchangeable. A prescriber must account for prior opioid exposure, the specific product, organ function and incomplete cross-tolerance when considering a change.
