More about Lyrica

Lyrica product details

Lyrica contains pregabalin, a prescription gabapentinoid with approved uses in several neuropathic pain conditions, fibromyalgia and adjunctive seizure treatment. The immediate-release capsules and oral solution are distinct from Lyrica CR, which has separate release characteristics and indications. Pregabalin is federally controlled in Schedule V, reflecting recognized misuse potential. A prescriber considers the exact diagnosis, renal function, other sedatives and adverse effects before deciding whether it is an appropriate treatment.

Generic name pregabalin Brand names Lyrica, Lyrica CR (different formulation) Drug class Gabapentinoid anticonvulsant US federal status Schedule V Available forms Capsules: 25–300 mg in multiple strengths; solution 20 mg/mL. 02How it works Pregabalin binds to alpha-2-delta subunits of voltage-gated calcium channels in the nervous system. This can reduce release of excitatory neurotransmitters and contributes to its antiseizure and analgesic effects, although the precise mechanism in each clinical condition is not completely established. Despite its structural relationship to GABA, it is not a direct GABA-receptor agonist. It therefore should not be described as simply supplying more GABA or acting like a benzodiazepine. Benefit is specific to the treated condition rather than a general anesthetic or anti-inflammatory effect.

Elimination half-life About 6.3 hours with normal renal function Absorption & metabolism Pregabalin is well absorbed orally, with exposure more proportional to dose than that of gabapentin. Food can change the rate of absorption without making the immediate-release product an extended-release medicine. It undergoes little metabolism and is eliminated predominantly unchanged through the kidneys. Its mean half-life is about 6.3 hours with normal renal function and becomes longer with impairment. Hemodialysis substantially removes the medicine. These properties explain why kidney function, rather than liver enzyme metabolism alone, strongly influences the prescribing plan. Half-life describes elimination, not how long benefits last or how long a drug test remains positive. Age, organ function, formulation, and other medicines can change these estimates.

03Medical uses FDA-approved indications Immediate-release Lyrica is FDA-approved for neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia, fibromyalgia and neuropathic pain associated with spinal cord injury, as well as adjunctive treatment of partial-onset seizures. Age-specific approvals and regimens differ by indication. Lyrica CR has a narrower, separate label.

Clinical context & off-label use Generalized anxiety treatment is off-label in the United States.

04Expected effects Pregabalin may reduce pain from approved neuropathic conditions or fibromyalgia and improve seizure control as adjunctive treatment. Dizziness, blurred vision and sleepiness can limit daily activities.

Response differs between individuals. Taking more than prescribed or using someone else’s medication increases harm and is not a reliable way to improve treatment.

05Dosage & administration The clinician selects a regimen for the specific indication and adjusts for kidney function, tolerability and response. Immediate-release capsules and solution can be taken with or without food; a liquid needs an accurate measuring device. Lyrica CR has its own meal and administration requirements and should not be substituted independently. Dose escalation is not automatically beneficial because dizziness, edema and other adverse effects can rise with exposure. If treatment is discontinued, a gradual reduction is needed, and seizure patients require particular attention to maintaining seizure control.

Forms & strengths Capsules: 25–300 mg in multiple strengths; solution 20 mg/mL. Prescribing considerations Renal impairment, heart failure risk and respiratory disease require caution. This overview is not a dosing schedule. Follow the exact prescription label and product Medication Guide; a clinician or pharmacist should resolve missed-dose questions and formulation changes.

06Side effects & risks Common side effects Dizziness, somnolence, edema, weight gain, blurred vision.

Serious reactions & long-term concerns Pregabalin can cause serious respiratory depression when combined with CNS depressants or in people with respiratory impairment. Angioedema, severe hypersensitivity and suicidal thoughts or behavior are additional important warnings. Edema and weight gain can complicate care in people with cardiac risk, and blurred vision or sedation can impair activity. Dependence and misuse are possible despite Schedule V being a lower schedule than many opioids. Facial or throat swelling, serious breathing changes or severe impairment need urgent assessment rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Know when to get urgent help Call 911 for slowed or stopped breathing, inability to wake, seizure, collapse, or severe allergic swelling. If an opioid overdose is suspected, give naloxone if available and follow its instructions while emergency help is on the way. 07Drug interactions Opioids, benzodiazepines, sleeping medicines and alcohol can add sedation and breathing suppression. Pregabalin has relatively few pharmacokinetic interactions because it is not substantially metabolized by CYP enzymes, but pharmacodynamic interactions remain clinically important. Thiazolidinedione diabetes medicines can increase concerns about edema and weight gain. A prescriber should consider heart failure risk and all sedating substances rather than assessing each medicine in isolation. Renal impairment can also amplify exposure without any new drug interaction, so changes in health may alter an otherwise stable regimen.

Give your pharmacist a complete list of prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, supplements, and alcohol or other substance use. Do not assume a combination is safe because both medicines were prescribed.

08Dependence, tolerance & withdrawal Abrupt or rapid discontinuation can cause insomnia, anxiety, sweating, nausea, headache or diarrhea, and seizure control may worsen. The label recommends gradual withdrawal, with the actual plan individualized to indication, duration and response. Pregabalin can produce physical dependence and has recognized misuse potential, but dependence is not the same as a substance use disorder. Returning pain may represent recurrence of the treated condition rather than proof that a higher dose is needed. Clinician follow-up helps distinguish these possibilities and plan alternatives if required.

Physical dependence is an adaptation to regular exposure; it is different from addiction, which involves impaired control and continued use despite harm. A clinician can assess both and plan a gradual reduction when appropriate.

09Pricing & availability Lyrica prescription costs vary by strength, formulation, quantity, pharmacy, insurance coverage, and whether a generic is dispensed. A brand name in this reference does not guarantee that the brand is currently marketed or stocked.

Current cash prices have not been independently verified; no price estimate is provided. Ask a licensed pharmacy for a dated quote, compare your insurance copay with legitimate discount offers, and check eligibility for manufacturer assistance. Discount cards are not insurance.

Compare Medicare prescription coverage ↗ 10Legal status in the United States US federal classification: Schedule V. The medication discussed here has FDA-approved prescription formulations. Approval applies to specific products, routes, indications, and patient groups; it does not endorse every clinical use.

Possession and dispensing must comply with prescription and controlled-substance rules. State requirements can be stricter than federal rules; consult a pharmacist or state authority for your jurisdiction.

11Lyrica vs Neurontin Pregabalin and gabapentin share alpha-2-delta binding and several adverse effects, including dizziness, sleepiness and edema. Pregabalin has more predictable absorption and FDA indications that include fibromyalgia and certain neuropathic pain syndromes beyond Neurontin’s postherpetic neuralgia indication. Both require renal adjustment and can suppress breathing when combined with opioids or other depressants. Their federal control differs, and state rules add another layer for gabapentin. Neither is an equal-dose replacement for the other; the indication, response and adverse effects guide any clinician-managed change.
